bio

Growing up in the South Bronx,
One was hard pressed to humor
certain lifestyles, thuggish n'er-do-well,
responsible businessman, or eccentric weirdo.
Alex Mercado has gone for the latter in achieving
his certain vision for his creativity. Combining commercial
illustration with fine art sensibilities, leading the viewer
to find the joy in the gritty deliciousness that is "pop-kitcsh".

Alex goes under many pseudo monikers dependent on what style of
art he is producing. Much like any rapper from the Wu-Tang clan
(K.O.M.P/DeFMachine/AlexM)
he primarily works in Inks, watercolors, acrylics, and has begun to step
into the video installation age)

Inspired, but not wholly derivative of bizarre 80's subcultures infused
with strange 90's sensibilities. Alex M, has years of pop-culture nonsense
in the memory banks to draw inspiration from. Tapping from horror, comics,
manga, anime, celebrity nonsense, faded trends, a horrible love life,
depression, body dysmorphia and years of Catholic School repression,
he concocts beautiful, and savage imagery. In a sense to disturb, titilate, or confuse the viewer.
It's all aided by the blackest of humors to poke fun at certain subjects, or bring
to light some of the most emotionally bleak work he can muster.

It is made to create some sort of reaction. Like any artist tries to do.
Now you realize he has written this in third person to make him seem
like an elitist scum.
